This DIY slide-out surprise card is simple to create, easy to customize, and works beautifully with so many different stamp sets, Designer Series Papers, and color combinations. Best of all, decorating the hidden pocket is just as much fun as filling it with a special surprise!
A Sweet Birthday Card with the Wild Bunch Stamp Set
Did you pick up June’s $5 Product of the Month? I certainly hope so because the Wild Bunch Stamp Set is absolutely adorable! From the sweet little animal friends to the fun greetings and decorative accents, it’s quickly become one of my favorites.
For this birthday card, I started with a Peaceful Pine card base and layered it with Gingham Gallery Designer Series Paper, which pairs perfectly with the charming Highland cow. I used the Stylish Shapes Dies to create layered squares and a coordinating greeting tag.
The hidden slide-out card was stamped on Basic White Cardstock using Peaceful Pine ink, then decorated with the adorable gifts in Crisp Cantaloupe and Peaceful Pine. Of course, I couldn’t resist adding a tiny party hat to my little cow! I colored him with Pecan Pie, Crisp Cantaloupe, and Smoky Slate Stampin’ Blends, then finished his nose with a touch of Clear Wink of Stella for just the right amount of sparkle.
This card came together quickly and would be perfect for adding a Starbucks gift card—or any favorite treat for someone special.
Here’s what you need to know to create this card.
CUTTING/SCORING INSTRUCTIONS
BASE: (Peaceful Pine) 5 1/2″x8 1/2″, score at 2 1/2″ and 6 1/2″
FRONT LAYERS: (DSP top) 5 1/4″x2 1/4″; **if adding a layer of cardstock underneath make it 5 1/8″x2 1/8″; (DSP bottom) 5 1/4″x1 3/4″; **if adding a layer of cardstock underneath make it 5 1/8″x1 5/8″
INSIDE SLIDE OUT: (Basic White) 4 1/4″x5 7/8″, score at 2″ and 5 3/8″; **if adding a layer of DSP to the slide out as in the 3rd sample, make it 3 1/8″x4″
OPTIONAL CARD INSERT: if you’d like to add a pull out card in the pocket cut the cardstock at 3 1/2″x2 3/4″ and Basic White at 3 1/4″x2 1/2″. I like to use a corner rounder on all the pieces and I add a ribbon between the layers as a “pull tab”
Elegant Thank You Card with the Moonlit Flora Suite
You know I couldn’t resist creating a project with the beautiful Moonlit Flora Suite. The elegant floral patterns and rich colors make it perfect for heartfelt thank you cards.
I used Crisp Cantaloupe for the card base, layered with Peaceful Pine and the gorgeous Moonlit Flora Designer Series Paper. A floral bouquet, delicate bow, and sparkling moths complete the front of the card.
Inside, I created the slide-out pocket using coordinating Designer Series Paper and tucked in matching ribbon and embellishments instead of a gift card. This special card is headed to one of my newest customers, and I hope she enjoys the little surprise waiting inside!
Bright Birthday Wishes with Balloon Festoon
For my final sample, I wanted something bright, cheerful, and full of celebration.
The Balmy Blue card base was inspired by the vibrant colors in the Beautiful Ordinary Life Designer Series Paper. I love combining polka dots and stripes—they create such a fun and playful look!
Using the Balloon Festoon Bundle, I die cut balloons from Balmy Blue, Berry Burst, and Daffodil Delight cardstock and stamped matching balloons on the slide-out insert.
The greeting was created with the Banner Dies, while balloon strings and coordinating embellishments finished the design.
Although this pocket is perfect for holding cash or a gift card, I also left space on the back of the pull-out insert for a handwritten message, making it a keepsake all on its own.
